Description

Dear INSPIRE Geoportal Thematic viewer team,

Dear Helpdesk; we have updated the harvesting frequencies of 2 catalogues over a week ago in the inspire registry (http://inspire-geoportal.ec.europa.eu/INSPIRERegistry/registers/services/allproposals ): * Geocatalogue de la région Bruxelloise : from weekly to daily * Geopunt : from weekly to daily On the thematic geoportal the harvesting frequency has not yet been updated? Does this mean this has to be updated differently ? Thank you in advance Ouns

Best regards,
Ouns Kissiyar

Dear Ouns,

I confirm that you went to the right place to make the modifications.

GeoCatalogue de la Région de Bruxelles-Capitale

The frequency is correctly set on the server as daily:

       <ns2:RecachingFrequency>daily</ns2:RecachingFrequency>

I had to promote the latest harvesting manually because:
the totale number of harvested metadata DECREASED from 57 to 56

The latest harvesting is:

The last harvesting was performed today.

However, the scheduling frequency is still set to weekly.

I also see a problem in the registry itsels.

I kindly ask you to deactivate the current registration and create a new one for this Discovery Service.

Best regards,

Angelo

Subject: Issue harvesting Flemish CSW

Dear,

We recently changed the update frequency of the Belgian (Flemish) INSPIRE metadata service (Geopunt-Metadatacenter) from weekly to daily. Since than (April 19) it seems that no harvesting has been done anymore. When I check the register I see even no more indication of the latest harvest. See image below. Can you urgently check this issue?

Thx

Bart

#4 Updated by Bart Cosyn over 2 years ago

I deactivated previous definition of the Flemish metadata-center and submitted a new one. But the submission seems to take a very long time and nothing happens in the browser. Is this normal behaviour? Can you see any trace of my submission of a new discovery entry?

#5 Updated by Angelo Quaglia over 2 years ago

Thank you Bart,

please just wait.

The INSPIRE Geoportal server CPU is already at 1154%.

Best regards,

Angelo

#6 Updated by Angelo Quaglia over 2 years ago

Dear Bart,

harvestings from Germany and France are both running so, it might not be the best moment.

In any case, do not worry, even though deactivated, the previous registration will keep working perfectly and your service will be harvested regularly.

Best regards,

Angelo

#7 Updated by Bart Cosyn over 2 years ago

I gave it a new try this evening. No succes. Can you warn me when the system is available again? I am not sure if the old config will keep on running. I already deactivated it. I should suppose that at that moment harvesting is stopped immediately.

#8 Updated by Angelo Quaglia over 2 years ago

Dear Bart,

as I already tried to explain above, even though the registration has been deactivated, the configuration stays on the server until it is removed by the system adminstrator (me).

I implemented this mechanism years ago as a failsafe.

I will tell you as soon as the server is in s quite state.

Best regards,

Angelo

Hi,

After submitting the new harvest of metadata.geopunt.be 4 days ago, which was scheduled to be daily, we saw no succefull harvest results. If the problem is at our side we like to know what the issue could be.

Regards
Bart

Hi Angelo,

I restarted some components and it seems that it should be more responsive now. Do you have an idea when the daily harvesting is done exactly or does it depend on as sort of queuing mechanism?

Bart

#14 Updated by Angelo Quaglia over 2 years ago

Hi Bart,

it is indeed queued and not easy to predict.

However, I can kick it off at any time as I have just done.

Let us see what it gives.

Angelo

#15 Updated by Angelo Quaglia over 2 years ago

Dear Bart,

the INSPIRE Geoportal harvested your Discovery Service yesterday with no performance problem, but found less records than before:

Result of the interaction with the Discovery Service

Resources available for discovery: 353, Expected Resource Count: 353, Actual Resource Count : 353

In the first harvest there were 16 more records:

Result of the interaction with the Discovery Service

Resources available for discovery: 368, Expected Resource Count: 368, Actual Resource Count : 368

Could you please confirm the decrease?

Best regards,

Angelo

#16 Updated by Bart Cosyn over 2 years ago

Hi Angelo,

Seems that this is OK. So I can confirm this decrease.

Bart

#17 Updated by Angelo Quaglia over 2 years ago

Thanks Bart.

I need to wait for the completion of new harvesting attempt that started automatically this morning.

I have noticed that the elapsed time is quite high.

Most of the time is spent waiting for Network Services to respond.

The INSPIRE Geoportal is only allowed to harvest with one concurrent request:

 Page created02 May 2018, 12:00:56 GMT     Page modified02 May 2018, 19:47:22 GMT

It might be worth increasing that number to 3 or higher.

Best regards,

Angelo

#18 Updated by Bart Cosyn over 2 years ago

OK thanks. I am wondering if I could get a list of the biggest responsivity issues. Anyhow I will update the number of parallel connections in the harvest configuration.

#19 Updated by Angelo Quaglia over 2 years ago

Dear Bart,

The timing data is collected and available but it is spread out. I will come up with something to show in the harvesting reports.

In the meantime, such high elapsed time is usually due to requests to Network Services that time-out.

I see that you offer 1700+ layers.

So, I glanced through them and found out this example:

Indeed, this request takes severalseconds:

https://geoservices.informatievlaanderen.be/raadpleegdiensten/INBO/wms?request=GetMap&FORMAT=image/png&SRS=EPSG:4326&BBOX=2.52,50.64,5.94,51.51&service=WMS&STYLES=&WIDTH=1524&HEIGHT=1524&TRANSPARENT=TRUE&version=1.1.1&LAYERS=PNVeg

Best regards,
Angelo

I see other anomalies.

I noticed that this endpoint looks like a WFS but responds also like a WMS:

https://www.dov.vlaanderen.be/geoserver/wfs?request=GetCapabilities&service=WMS&version=1.3.0

After many, many seconds, the service actually responds as a WMS and sends back a capabilities dcument of about 2 MBytes in size describing approximately 803  layers.

I think that it is a GeoServer limitation that an endpoint like that one responds also as a WMS.

Therefore, I recommend that in the metadata  the full GetCapabilities request be specified.

Requests to this other Discovery Service are slowing down the resolution of coupled resources:

https://www.dov.vlaanderen.be/geonetwork/srv/eng/csw?Service=CSW&version=2.0.2&Request=GetRecordById&outputschema=http://www.isotc211.org/2005/gmd&elementSetName=full&id=6a047929-7134-4f41-af11-7fa71ed0ab13

If you confirm my findings, then it is the whole SDI that needs to be optimised.

The INSPIRE Network Service Regulation describes clear minimum performance criteria for the Network Services.

It is the only way to achieve a functioning and reliable INSPIRE SDI that works seamlessly across Europe.

Best regards,

Angelo

#22 Updated by Angelo Quaglia about 2 years ago

Dear Bart,

the following AGIV OGC CSW 2.0.2 service :

https://metadata.geopunt.be/zoekdienst/srv/dut/csw?SERVICE=CSW&VERSION=2.0.2&REQUEST=GetCapabilities

seems to have serious capacity and performance issues.

The INSPIRE Geoportal is unable to perform a clean harvest unless these basic harvesting parameters are used:

        <ns2:MaxRecords>10</ns2:MaxRecords>
        <ns2:MaxParallelRequests>1</ns2:MaxParallelRequests>

With any values higher than those, the Discover Metadata requests issued by the INSPIRE Geoportal  time out as follows:

The interaction with the remote service at "http://metadata.geopunt.be/zoekdienst/srv/dut/csw?SERVICE=CSW&VERSION=2.0.2&REQUEST=GetCapabilities" ended with the following error "The resource url: "https://metadata.geopunt.be/zoekdienst/srv/dut/csw" did not respond within 18000ms"

That means, that the service does not qualify as an INSPIRE Discovery Service:

(From the Network Service Regulation)

ANNEX I QUALITY OF SERVICE

...

The following Quality of Service criteria relating to performance, capacity and
availability shall apply.
1. PERFORMANCE
The normal situation represents periods out of peak load. It is set at 90 % of
the time.
The response time for sending the initial response to a discovery service
request shall be maximum 3 seconds in normal situation.
...

2. CAPACITY
The minimum number of simultaneous requests to a discovery service to be
served in accordance with the quality of service performance criteria shall be
30 per second.

The reason for asking minimum performance requirements is to ensure the usability, reliability and interoperability of the INSPIRE SDI.

For the time being I have kept your previous registration identified by INSPIRE-f19eadfe-4df3-11e8-a459-52540023a883.

For the new registration identified by INSPIRE-41332fc5-52b2-11e8-b3d8-52540023a883 (for which currently no records have been harvested), I have manually updated the harvesting parameters on the server, lowering them as follows:

        <ns2:MaxRecords>10</ns2:MaxRecords>
        <ns2:MaxParallelRequests>1</ns2:MaxParallelRequests>

If the next harvesting succeeds, I will archive the old registration but I recommend you address the performance issues andlet me know.

Dear Bart,

I think I can confirm the AGIV service has serious capacity problems.

It must be harvested by small amounts, one request at a time.

With the old registration, the harvesting has been slow but successful:

Angelo,

I updated the harvest definiton to 10 records thru 2 parallel sessions. In the mean time I am checking if I can get and idea of the root cause of this issue. Keep you posted on that. I can also tell you that we are working on a new version of the system. Will keep in mind that this issue must be tackled at high priority.

#26 Updated by Bart Cosyn about 2 years ago

Hi Angelo,

I changed some parameters on our CSW and did some upgrades of the infrastructure. So please let me know asap  if this helped something. We have other systems that harvest our csw regurarely. Until now, these system  only reported degraded performance but no unexpected time-outs.

Regards

Bart

#27 Updated by Bart Cosyn about 2 years ago

Angelo,

Since this weekend the root cause of the time-outs and hopefully also of the bad performance of the csw seems to be found. I am wondering if you can see this in the harvesting results. In the meantime I changed the config to 2 simultaneous calls and a maxrecords of 20.

Cheers

Bart

Dear Bart,

the service appears to be still quite unreliable:

The interaction with the remote service at "http://metadata.geopunt.be/zoekdienst/srv/dut/csw?SERVICE=CSW&VERSION=2.0.2&REQUEST=GetCapabilities" ended with the following error "The resource url: "https://metadata.geopunt.be/zoekdienst/srv/dut/csw" did not respond within 17000ms"

  • Priority changed from Normal to High

Dear Bart,

I have now been forced to disable the harvesting from the endpoint Geopunt-Metadatacenter zoekdienst (AGIV)

Many batches keep failing because of this error:

The interaction with the remote service at "http://metadata.geopunt.be/zoekdienst/srv/dut/csw?SERVICE=CSW&VERSION=2.0.2&REQUEST=GetCapabilities" ended with the following error "The resource url: "https://metadata.geopunt.be/zoekdienst/srv/dut/csw" did not respond within 17000ms"

As a result the INSPIRE Geoportal rejects the harvesting results:

Ratio of documents actually retrieved is too low ( < 95% ): 0.7567567567567568

Dear Angelo,

We analyzed the problems you mentioned.

In our access logs we only see an issue on 10h45. (è = moment of your log-file: Jun  8 10:41 INSPIRE-41332fc5-52b2-11e8-b3d8-52540023a883_20180608-103515)

This issue was due to a limitation on the connection pool. So we upgraded this to 40.

Can you harvest again, please, to see if all the issues you had are solved now?

If you encountered more issues than that at 10h45, can you foresee us the logs from those moments as well. So we can analyze those as well.

Kind regards,

#33 Updated by Angelo Quaglia about 2 years ago

Dear Geraldine,

yes, I have been performing some tests (I have started another one just a few minutes ago so that you can have a look at fresh logs) and I confirm you that the performance and capacity of the Geopunt-Metadatacenter do not satisfy the minimum requirements for INSPIRE Discovery Services (see the picture below).

The only way to make it work, is to harvest from it 10 records at a time, one request at a time.

Otherwise, it simply cannot cope:

The interaction with the remote service at "https://metadata.geopunt.be/zoekdienst/srv/dut/csw?SERVICE=CSW&VERSION=2.0.2&REQUEST=GetCapabilities" ended with the following error "The resource url: "https://metadata.geopunt.be/zoekdienst/srv/dut/csw" did not respond within 17000ms"

#34 Updated by Angelo Quaglia about 2 years ago

Therefore, I will keep in production the minimum yield settings (1 parallel request and 10 records per request).

With those settings, all records can, usually, be retrieved.

Please note that the maximum initial response across all GetRecords requests was 11.571 which is quite high:

PERFORMANCE
Initial response (seconds) 11.571
Transmission time (seconds) 47.776
Bytes transferred 20,475,117
Average MBytes/sec 0.409

The report for today's havresting is here:

Hi Angelo,

I am back on the business.

I did some tuning but in fact we can not reproduce the problem. And we hardly see errors in the logfiles. Could you please reharvest again and if possible hand us  more detailed info about the requests and the responses. As far as I could read form the errors you have sent so far it seems that some requests are going good but that the system gets too many dataconnections so it fails or that connections ar dropped. Can you also hand me ver the public ip address of the sytem that executes the batch job? I suppose you have a public one or that you are connecting to the outside using a proxy with a certain ip range. The more detailed info we can get from you the faster i can get to the root cause.

Another strange thing is dat we have 2 own implementations that are harvesting this csw regularly and they do not face these timeouts.

Thx

Bart

#44 Updated by Angelo Quaglia about 2 years ago

Hi Bart,

finally! Where have you been? ;-)

The IP address of the harvester is the one of the INSPIRE Geoportal:  139.191.1.236

The INSPIRE Geoportal harvests Discovery Services 24 hours a day and yours is actually the only one where I see the timeouts, so it is unlikely that it depends on our side.

I can reproduce the problem at will:

I am trying this very moment from my workstation (external IP 139.191.247.0) and I am getting the timeouts:

29 Jun 2018 16:53:09,441 DEBUG [pool-4-thread-1] (Locator.java:2041) - The locator "https://metadata.geopunt.be/zoekdienst/srv/dut/csw" did not respond within the specified timeout of 17000 ms
29 Jun 2018 16:53:09,441  INFO [pool-4-thread-1] (CSW.java:378) - Error on getRecords request: The resource url: "https://metadata.geopunt.be/zoekdienst/srv/dut/csw" did not respond within 17000ms

At what rate do your internal harvesters ask for records? I mean maxRecords and parallel requests?

The number of failed batches can vary, as you can see from this error reports generated at different times:

Jun 27 22:38 http://inspire-geoportal.ec.europa.eu/resources/errors/INSPIRE-41332fc5-52b2-11e8-b3d8-52540023a883_20180627-223537/services/1/PullResults

I think that your current instance does not scale properly and does not offer the minimum performance required by the Network Service Regulation.

Best regards,
Angelo

#54 Updated by Angelo Quaglia about 2 years ago

Dear Bart,

I tried twice the test endpoint on the 17th but it failed with this message:

<Message>HTTP connection failed at url: "http://geonetwork.beta.geopunt.be:8080/zoekdienst/srv/eng/csw" because Service Unavailable</Message>

The test URL I used was indeed this one:

The problem is in what I get back in the capabilities document:
  <ows:OperationsMetadata>
      <ows:Operation name="GetCapabilities">
         <ows:DCP>
            <ows:HTTP>
               <ows:Get xlink:href="http://geonetwork.beta.geopunt.be:8080/zoekdienst/srv/eng/csw"/>
               <ows:Post xlink:href="http://geonetwork.beta.geopunt.be:8080/zoekdienst/srv/eng/csw"/>
            </ows:HTTP>
         </ows:DCP>

The Geoportal uses the endpoint declared in the Capabilities documment because identifies the Network Service unambiguously.

Best regards,
Angelo

Hi Angelo,

I changed the endpoint in the getcapabilities document from port 8080 to the proper URL. Hope it works now.

Bart

#56 Updated by Angelo Quaglia almost 2 years ago

Dear Bart,

the Discovery Service

https://metadata.geopunt.be/zoekdienst/srv/dut/csw

keeps being extremely unreliable and the INSPIRE Geoportal needs to try many times in order to get a clean harvest.

For this reason I have disabled the daily harvesting until I receive some feedback from you.

One or more batches keep failing with a timeout:

The interaction with the remote service at "http://metadata.geopunt.be/zoekdienst/srv/dut/csw?SERVICE=CSW&VERSION=2.0.2&REQUEST=GetCapabilities" ended with the following error "The resource url: "https://metadata.geopunt.be/zoekdienst/srv/dut/csw" did not respond within 17000ms"

The beta endpoint seems to respond better. When do you plan to switch it to production?

Best regards,

Angelo

We found a configuration error on our system that caused unpredictable behaviour when using the https endpoint of our CSW. So maybe this could also have caused the time outs. I was wondering if you are still harvesting the geopunt CSW. If I look at http://inspire-geoportal.ec.europa.eu/harvesting_status.html I see it was harvested last thusrday while on http://inspire-geoportal.ec.europa.eu/INSPIRERegistry/ there is no info about the last harvest. Which info is reliable? And can you please check if this fix is a solution for the time-outs you experienced since some months.

Thx

Bart

Dear Bart,

yes, last Thursday was the last time the service was harvested.

This information is current:

The INSPIRE Registry was not showing the information because there must have been some problems the last time you updated it when the server was overloaded.

I need to ask you to register again but please wait for the server to respond without clicking multiple times.

Value of maxrecords 10required===>  is the highest you can allow?
Max parallel HTTP requests 1required required===>  is the best you can allow?
Recaching frequency daily required===> do you need it to be daily?
Discovery Link Scenario centralised required
(Optional) Discovery Filter Text

This is the filter you had in place:

<ogc:Filter xmlns:ogc="http://www.opengis.net/ogc">
  <ogc:PropertyIsLike escapeChar="\" singleChar="_" wildCard="%">
    <ogc:PropertyName>keyword</ogc:PropertyName>
    <ogc:Literal>%Lijst%M%R%INSPIRE%</ogc:Literal>
  </ogc:PropertyIsLike>
</ogc:Filter>

Best regards,

Angelo

Dear Bart,

the situation seems to have improved but the problem can still occur.

I allowed the INSPIRE Geoportal try  multiple times and here are the results:

As I requested above, could you please re-register your service?

Best regards,

Dear Bart,

would it be possible for you to register again that endoint?

Best reagrds,
Angelo

I gave it a try but got an answer that the url of the  csw is not available (see attach). Although I am quite sure that this url works. At least it works from an azure VM, my  personal internet connection an the network of my organisation.

Thank you very much for trying Bart.

Elena from Greece is having problems as well.

It is a configuration problem on the INSPIRE Geoportal. I am working on it.

Best regards,
Angelo

OK, it works now.

Could you please try again?

OK. I submitted the csw. Seems it worked now. Keep me informed on the harvesting.

Dear Bart,

the reharvesting was a complete disaster. I think that after so long we can say that the "Geopunt-Metadatacenter zoekdienst " CSW has dramatic and structural capacity problems.

All batches except one failed:

The interaction with the remote service at "https://metadata.geopunt.be/zoekdienst/srv/dut/csw?SERVICE=CSW&VERSION=2.0.2&REQUEST=GetCapabilities" ended with the following error "The resource url: "https://metadata.geopunt.be/zoekdienst/srv/dut/csw" did not respond within 18000ms

I have just harvested the new Greek endpoint with no issues at all.

Here is the report:

Best regards,
Angelo

Is there a way to have a telco on this next week or after? I am testing the harvesting from time to time with a webtest. We know it is not that fast but we never never saw these long time-outs. Or is it an option that I register our "upcoming" node and see what that gives? Should be great to do it in your beta/test environment. We are just using geonetwork as a base. And in my opinion a lot of others use this as well.

Dear Bart,

I reported this issue six months ago.

I do not understand what additional evidence you need.

The INSPIRE Geoportal harvests from 37 endpoints of all Europe.

For example, the German Discovery Service delivers 54,017 metadata documents, 50 documents per request and 5 concurrent requests, with no error and a maximum response time between 2 and 9 seconds.

I see that you entered again two parallel requests for harvesting the endpoint:

        <ns9:MaxRecords>20</ns9:MaxRecords>
        <ns9:MaxParallelRequests>2</ns9:MaxParallelRequests>

The evidence shows that your endpoint cannot cope with that.

During your webtests, what kind of load scenario are you reproducing?

How many concurrent requests?

How many consecutive GetRecords requests?

Are you harvesting systematically the whole catalogue?

In any case, I have downgraded the parameters to:

        <ns9:MaxRecords>10</ns9:MaxRecords>
        <ns9:MaxParallelRequests>1</ns9:MaxParallelRequests>

I gave you feedback about your test endpoint 1 month ago.

Whether to register that as the official endopint is your decision, not mine.

Best regards,

Angelo
