8.2 Short description

The EIONET Data Dictionary is a service for storing technical specifications of datasets, tables and data elements maintained by the European Environment Agency. It is used to support the delivery of environmental data by countries to Reportnet. The contents in the data dictionary are used to generate pdfs of the technical specifications for dataflows as well as Excel templates. The Data Dictionary also introduces the possibility of simple automated validation of deliveries by countries and facilitates the development of data submission interfaces.

Primarily use case for INSPIRE is the maintenance of EEA code lists that are relevant for INSPIRE and the analysis of data received from other organisations. A relevant use case is the validation of code values used in Reportnet deliveries.

8.3Registry content

Table 4 shows an example EIONET register with INSPIRE relevant information.

Name of register

Description of the content

The biogeographical regions dataset contains the official delineations used in the Habitats Directive (92/43/EEC) and for the EMERALD Network set up under the Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats (Bern Convention). The dataset is INSPIRE compliant.

Use case

Working at the biogeographical level makes it easier to conserve species and habitat types under similar natural conditions across a suite of countries, irrespective of political and administrative boundaries.
